About Self-Locking
Understanding worm gear backdrive prevention
Self-locking capability means the worm gear will not backdrive — when the input (worm) stops rotating, the output (worm wheel) cannot rotate the worm backward. This is ideal for lifting, hoisting, and positioning applications.
Self-locking is achieved when the worm lead angle is less than the friction angle:
- Single-start worms (low lead angles): Strong self-locking capability ✓
- Multi-start worms (higher lead angles): Better efficiency but may not self-lock
